ITCR Funding Opportunities

The ITCR program issues new Notices of Funding Opportunities (NOFOs) annually with funding opportunities to support algorithm and method development; early-stage tool development; enhancement and dissemination of emerging informatics technologies; and sustainment of widely-used informatics technologies. Potential applicants for any of these funding opportunities should read the relevant Request for Applications (RFA) thoroughly and note the RFA-specific application and review requirements.

ITCR Funding Opportunities

Algorithm Development

RFA-CA-24-016: Development of Innovative Methods and Algorithms for Cancer Research and Management (R21 Clinical Trial Optional)

This NOFO supports the development of innovative methods and algorithms in biomedical computing, informatics, and data sciences addressing priority needs across the cancer research continuum.

Budget: Up to $275,000 Direct Costs over a two-year period, with no more than $200,000 requested in a single year.

Early-Stage Tool Development

RFA-CA-24-017: Early-Stage Development of Informatics Technologies for Cancer Research and Management (U01 Clinical Trial Optional)

This NOFO supports the early-stage development of informatics technology to improve the acquisition, management, and/or analysis of data addressing priority needs across the cancer research continuum. Early-stage development is defined as initial tool development or the significant modification of an existing tool for a new application.

Budget: Up to $300,000 Direct Costs per year for up to three years.

Enhancement & Dissemination

RFA-CA-24-018: Advanced Development of Informatics Technologies for Cancer Research and Management (U24 Clinical Trial Optional)

This NOFO supports the advanced development and enhancement of emerging informatics technologies to improve the acquisition, management, and/or analysis of data addressing priority needs across the cancer research continuum.

Budget: Up to $600,000 Direct Costs per year for up to five years.

Sustainment

RFA-CA-24-019: Sustained Support for Informatics Technologies for Cancer Research and Management (U24 Clinical Trial Optional)

This NOFO supports sustaining operations and improving the user experience and availability of existing, widely-adopted informatics tools and resources addressing needs across the cancer research continuum.

Budget: Application budgets are not limited but must reflect the actual needs of the proposed project.

Notices of Special Interest

NCI posts Notices of Special Interest (NOSIs) to stimulate grant-supported research in high-priority and high-opportunity areas of science. The following NOSIs direct applicants to the ITCR funding opportunities. For funding consideration, applicants should submit their applications to the appropriate funding opportunity and include the NOSI number in the Agency Routing Identifier field (box 4B) of the SF424 R&R form.

NOT-CA-23-060: RNA Modifications in Cancer Biology

Innovative Molecular Analysis Technologies (IMAT): Researchers focusing development of novel, physical laboratory technologies should consider one of the IMAT Funding Opportunities.

Bioengineering Research Grants: Interdisciplinary research teams proposing to develop new tools, methods, and techniques and apply them to a specific problem in basic or clinical cancer research should consider the bioengineering research grant R01 opportunities (PAR-22-242 or PAR-22-243) or the exploratory/developmental bioengineering research grant R21 opportunities (PAR-22-090 or PAR-22-091). Research teams composed of academic and industrial partners proposing to accelerate the development and adoption of promising bioengineering tools should consider PAR-22-123.

Academic Industrial Partnerships for Translation of Technologies: Interdisciplinary research teams composed of academic and industrial partners proposing to develop and translate a technological solution to a problem in basic or clinical research should consider PAR-21-166 or PAR-21-206. Teams specifically focused on translating engineering developments in imaging, data science, and/or spectroscopic technologies should consider PAR-23-259.

Translation and Transfer of Informatics Technologies: NCI’s small business innovative research (SBIR) development center has funding opportunities and resources for small businesses and researchers collaborating with small businesses to develop informatics technology for cancer research.
