Communities of Practice for Global Cancer Research and Control
Overview
The Center for Global Health (CGH) convenes scientific communities of practice that bring the research community together with cancer planners, implementers, people with lived experience, and clinicians. These unique programs foster the exchange of scientific knowledge relevant to cancer research, and its evidence-based implementation, to advance global cancer control. A number of current and recent CGH communities of practice have been convened through Project ECHO® (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes), a web-based bi-directional learning platform.
Impact
CGH Communities of Practice provide opportunities for equitable access to information and technical resources through online engagement. They do this by:
- using a low-cost, low-implementation online platform with video conferencing to build networks with the research, clinical, advocacy and policy communities active in low- and middle-income countries
- helping researchers and program implementers exchange scientific knowledge, understand additional research questions, advance research training, and frame research for program implementation with a focus on convening key groups working to strengthen capacity in global cancer control in low- and middle-income countries
- creating regional and topical networks in cancer research and control
- developing networks to share evidence-based cancer control resources and track how they’re used
- convening countries actively implementing their national cancer control plans to exchange knowledge on benefits and barriers and discuss the role for implementation science
CGH Communities of Practice
Active Communities of Practice:
- The International Cancer Control Partnership (ICCP) ECHO for National Cancer Control Plan implementation.
- The Global Cancer Research Training Community of Practice for early career trainees conducting research in low- and middle-income countries.
- The Action Group for Cervical Cancer Elimination for researchers and implementers to explore ways to hasten the research to practice timeline for evidence-based cervical cancer screening implementation.
- The Africa Survivorship Working Group for multi-stakeholder knowledge exchange and shared activities for understanding and addressing the needs and gaps in survivorship research and care in Africa.
- The Chemical Hair Straighteners and Cancer Risk Working Group for international scientists, clinicians, and advocates interested in policy and development of research to better understand the potential health impacts of chemical hair straightener use and opportunities for future research.
Past Communities of Practice:
- The NCCP iCAYA Series (National Cancer Control Planning Integrating Children, Adolescents, and Young Adults), in partnership with St. Jude’s Cancer Research Hospital
- The Caribbean Breast and Cervical Cancer Control ECHO
- The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Cervical Cancer ECHO (now convened as the SUCCESS ECHO by the VCS Foundation, Australia)
- Project ECHO for Knowledge Summaries for Comprehensive Breast Cancer Control
