SIP Current Interns

Welcome to the 2024 NCI Summer Internship Program!

Each November, the NIH recruits students across the nation to gain research experience in the biomedical sciences. High school students, undergrads, and graduate students are selected to participate in cancer research across the NCI Divisions, Offices, and Centers (DOCs). There will be numerous events designed to help you learn more about the NCI, assist you in your projects, and encourage your professional development. Summer is always an exciting time, and completing an internship isn’t easy, but we hope that you are able to gain the skills and tools you need for your next career stage.

"Welcome to 2024 NCI Summer Internship Program! Contributions toward advances in cancer research are made by people with many different skills, experiences and talents and at every career stage (including summer interns). There are a lot of amazing opportunities taking place this summer and I hope that you are able to take advantage of them. Please know that the NCI and NIH are always here to partner and support you in this journey."

- Oliver Bogler, Ph.D., Director of Center for Cancer Training

Summer Orientations and Mandatory Training

There will be a lot of information available to help you get started in the summer. The best way to get acclimated is to attend the summer orientations: one hosted by the NIH Office of Intramural Training & Education (OITE) and one hosted by NCI. All summer interns are required to attend an OITE orientation, which covers NIH culture and NIH-wide resources, and an NCI orientation, which covers NCI-specific administrative details and resources.

NCI Virtual Summer Orientation

If you were unable to attend, please view the virtual orientation held on June 25, 2024 here.

The NCI-wide orientation was held on June 10, 2024 in the Lipsett Auditorium (Building 10 – Bethesda Campus). Each DOC may have their own orientation to provide specific information, however all NCI interns are welcome to attend.

Be sure to check with your Summer Coordinator to determine which orientations and mandatory trainings are required for your internship. The requirements will be different depending on the campus location of your internship and focus of your research project.

You can find the complete list of orientations and mandatory trainings here.

Summer Curriculum

Both the NIH and NCI offer workshops, seminars, and events to support your career and professional goals. The NIH OITE offers weekly curriculum, summer intensives that focus on particular issues in science, and summer journal clubs.Calendar details are shared regularly via email, but can also be found on the Summer Intern Curriculum 2024 webpage.

The training offices at NCI have also put together curriculum to complement the offerings by NIH OITE. All offerings listed below are open to all NCI summer interns across the DOCs. Information about upcoming NCI-wide events, including the meeting details, will be sent weekly via email. Be sure to check with your Summer Coordinator for additional DOC-specific events.
