Bonnie Yates
Research Nurse, Center for Cancer Research at NCI
Working with patients and their families while on the pediatric oncology floor in nursing school ignited Bonnie Yates’s (she/her) passion for working with children and families.
Her career-long dedication to advancing childhood cancer research has led to her current work on the CD33CART study, which focuses on developing innovative treatments for childhood leukemia and reducing the taxing side effects associated with conventional treatments. The study targets a particular part of the leukemia cells called CD33. It is currently enrolling patients with relapsed acute myeloid leukemia, and initial experiences show that this approach is safe and feasible.
Bonnie notes that this work is a team effort, with patients being an important part of that team. “I am motivated by the patients and families that I work with every day,” she said. “They are such courageous people going through a difficult time, and I am happy to be able to help them.”
