Elizabeth Read-Connole, Ph.D.
Dr. Betsy Read-Connole has expertise in cancer etiology, oncogenic viruses, and biology related to HIV/AIDS and cancer. She manages a grant portfolio focusing on Kaposi’s sarcoma- associated herpesvirus, Epstein Barr virus (EBV), hepatitis B and C, human papilloma virus, and Merkel cell polyomavirus.
Along with her DCB responsibilities, Dr. Read-Connole also serves as the NCI representative to several trans-NIH committees focused on AIDS and viral hepatitis.

- NCI Serological Sciences Network for COVID-19 (SeroNet)
- Basic/Translational Research on Health Disparities in Underrepresented People Living with HIV (PLWH) and Cancer
Background
Prior to her work in DCB as a program director, Dr. Read-Connole was post-doctoral researcher in the HIV and AIDS Malignancy Branch at the NCI Center for Cancer Research (CCR).
She was involved in the isolation of the retrovirus that causes AIDS, which led to the development of the blood test for HIV detection. She is also a co-author on one of the original manuscripts describing the discovery of HIV.
