Matthew Hansen, Ph.D.

Dr. Matthew Hansen is a Scientist in the physical and chemical characterization division at the Nanotechnology Characterization Laboratory (NCL). His research focuses on characterization of nanoparticles, specializing in elemental analysis and single particle sizing analysis.

Prior to joining the NCL, Dr. Hansen received his masters degree from Purdue University where his work focused on the synthesis, characterization, and functionalization of gold nanorods for use as contrast imaging agents for cancer diagnostics. He first joined the NCL in 2008 as a research associate and worked there until 2015, when he returned to school to complete his PhD at Georgetown University. While at Georgetown University, his work focused on understanding light matter interactions with zinc oxide nanorods specifically looking at how their optical properties could be exploited to create miniaturized Raman probes. After completing his Ph.D. in 2019, Dr. Hansen rejoined the NCL as a Scientist.
