Paulette Gray, Ph.D., Director of NCI's Division of Extramural Activities

Paulette S. Gray, Ph.D., is the Director for the Division of Extramural Activities (DEA). Dr. Gray previously served as deputy and acting director of the division. As the director of the division, she is responsible for the overall scientific, fiscal, and administrative management of the division, including broad strategic planning, development, implementation, and evaluation. She oversees NCI grant policies, peer review, and other related procedures and activities. Gray came to NCI as the first special review officer and was the first chief of the Review Logistics Branch (now Special Review Branch) and as the division's first associate director for extramural applications. She also has held senior advisory positions with the Department of Health and Human Services. Before joining the NCI, Gray served as the laboratory supervisor at the Department of Defense, Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, the largest military hospital outside the continental U.S., located in the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG). She earned a B.S. in biology from Tuskegee University. She later received a M.S. in mycology and a Ph.D. in cellular and developmental biology from Atlanta University. Gray completed postdoctoral studies as a Josiah Macy Jr. Fellow at Woods Hole Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Mass., and was a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Kaiserslautern, FRG.
