Megestrol acetate is a type of hormone therapy. It is a synthetic form of the hormone progesterone. It disrupts the hormone balance in the body so that the body makes smaller amounts of the hormones that some cancers need to grow. It may also interact with other hormones or cause cancer cells to stop it growing.
