Ruth L. Kirschstein NRSA for Individual Predoctoral Fellows (F31)

  • Updated: 05/13/2013

Introduction

The purpose of the NCI F31 award is to support promising doctoral candidates who will be performing dissertation research and training in scientific health-related fields relevant to the mission of the NCI during the tenure of the award. The NCI F31 application has two components: 1) it must enhance the applicant's understanding of the health-related sciences; 2) the research conducted must be within the broad scope of the basic, clinical, and population science based research mission of the NCI. Applicants are encouraged to submit applications during the first three years of training to ensure that at least one year of dissertation-stage research training will remain at the time of award.

The NCI uses the F31 fellowship to provide support for graduate research training that leads to attainment of a PhD degree.  Applicants are encouraged to submit applications during the first three years of training to ensure that at least one year of dissertation-stage research training will remain at the time of award.NCI requires a clear cancer focus in graduate research training.

The primary sponsor must be the Principal Investigator (PI) of an R01, or R01-like, peer-reviewed cancer-focused research grant at the time of application. The primary sponsor is expected to maintain such grant support during the project period. For the NCI F31 award, R01-like research funding includes peer-reviewed research grants from other federal sources and private foundations.  The award duration must be for at least 3 years with a minimum of $150,000 direct costs per year. Grants under a no-cost extension do not qualify.

NCI fellowships that are discussed will be assigned a priority score and a percentile indicating the application’s relative standing among applications reviewed in the same study section.  Applications that are not discussed will not be assigned a priority score or a percentile.  All applications will receive the reviewers comments or “summary statement” approximately one month after the study section meets.
