New technique could improve accuracy of breast cancer diagnoses

Tiny calcium deposits can be a telltale sign of breast cancer. However, in the majority of cases these microcalcifications signal a benign condition. A new diagnostic procedure developed at MIT (home of the David H. Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research) and Case Western Reserve University (home of the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center) could help doctors more accurately distinguish between cancerous and noncancerous cases.

Among the research institutions NCI funds across the United States, it currently designates 67 as Cancer Centers. Largely based in research universities, these facilities are home to many of the NCI-supported scientists who conduct a wide range of intense, laboratory research into cancer’s origins and development. The Cancer Centers Program also focuses on trans-disciplinary research, including population science and clinical research.
