NIH-National Natural Science Foundation of China Joint Working Group Meeting for the US-China Program on Biomedical Research Cooperation
Representatives from the National Cancer Institute, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, the Office of AIDS Research, the National Institute of Mental Health, and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) participated in the second Joint Working Group (JWG) Meeting for the U.S.-China Program on Biomedical Research Cooperation. The JWG discussed projects for support for the second year of the NIH-NSFC jointly funded program (see calls for proposals in English and Chinese), which funds research collaborations between U.S. and Chinese scientists. During fiscal year 2012, the JWG decided to fund 42 grant supplements and intramural research projects to support U.S. investigators collaborating with Chinese colleagues.

NCI and Cancer Institute & Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences Host Scientific Workshop
Scientists, clinicians, and government officials from the United States and China met in Beijing for a workshop sponsored by NCI's Center for Global Health and the Cancer Institute and Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (CICAMS). Speakers and participants discussed research on cancer prevention, screening, and biomarkers. Other topics included cancer biomarker research for early diagnosis and prevention, NCI-supported studies of esophageal cancer in China, and U.S.-China collaborations by tumor site. They also reviewed the status of research in both countries and explored a broad range of opportunities for future collaboration. NCI and Chinese government officials highlighted funding opportunities and grant procedures for cancer researchers.

NCI and China Cancer Institute Host Workshop on Medical Journalism
The National Cancer Institute's Center for Global Health and the Cancer Institute and Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (CICAMS) hosted a workshop in early May on medical journalism and cancer research for Chinese editors and reporters to learn how to better evaluate, interpret, and summarize cancer research topics for a lay audience. The workshop Cancer Research in the Media helped journalists learn how to determine which studies are newsworthy and how to present scientific results accurately to the public. NCI and Cancer Institute & Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences Sign Statement of Intent
Dr. Jie He, president of the Cancer Institute/Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (CICAMS), and NCI Director Dr. Harold E. Varmus signed a statement of intent to share an interest in fostering collaborative biomedical research in oncology and a common goal in educating and training the next generation of cancer research scientists and clinicians. The signing took place March 14, during NCI Center for Global Health's meeting on Setting Priorities for Global Cancer Research. For more information, see the note in the NCI Cancer Bulletin.

Chinese, American Researchers Expand Collaborations
Collaboration between Chinese and American researchers continues to make outstanding progress in the cancer space. Chinese biomedical researchers are coming to America in higher numbers; however, they are eager to return to their native land and work in cooperation with American scientists. To show dedication to the field, many prominent researchers are supervising research laboratories in both countries. According to the National Science Foundation, China is second behind the United States in published, peer-reviewed articles in the biomedical sciences. The Chinese researchers hope to develop a stronger foundation in cancer research to better serve patients in China. During fiscal year 2011, the JWG decided to fund 34 grant supplements and intramural research projects to support U.S. investigators collaborating with Chinese colleagues. The NSFC provided complementary funding to support the Chinese investigators. NIH and NSFC representatives also participated in a roundtable on grants management and peer review.

While in Beijing, China, NCI officials also visited with Chinese colleagues from the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (CAMS), the Cancer Institute/Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (CICAMS) and toured the Beijing Cancer Hospital of Peking University.

Cancer Nanotechnology Research in the United States and China: Cooperation to Promote Innovation
The United States and China are international leaders in nanotechnology research, and have both launched national programs to support nanotechnology efforts in the recent past. The accelerating trend of co-authorship among US and Chinese nanotechnology researchers demonstrates that individual scientists already recognize the potential for cooperation, providing a strong platform for creating additional partnerships in pre-competitive research areas. Meeting with the Chinese Minister of Health
Members from the NIH and the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (CAMS) met to discuss opportunities for expanding biomedical research partnerships between the U.S. and China. Participants included Dr. Julie Schneider, Program Director, NCI; Dr. Francis Collins, NIH Director; Dr. Roger Glass, Fogarty International Center Director; Chen Zhu, Chinese Minister of Health; Depei Liu, the President of CAMS; as well as other NIH staff and members of the CAMS leadership team.

Memorandum of Understanding Signing with the National Natural Science Foundation of China
Dr. Francis Collins and Yiyu Chen, President of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSF China), a leading Chinese funder of scientific research, signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen and develop cooperation in basic biomedical research. NIH and NSF China plan to work together to develop new models to support joint research projects between U.S. and Chinese scientists initially in the areas of cancer, allergy, immunology, and infectious disease.

Lecture and NIH Alumni Event at Peking University Health Sciences Center
Dr. Francis Collins delivered a lecture to more than 200 faculty and students from Peking University Health Sciences Center. Following the lecture, Dr. Collins met with several Chinese scientists who completed research training at NIH.

Second Joint U.S.-China Symposium on Nanobiology and Nanomedicine
The NIH co-organized a symposium with the National Center for Nanoscience and Technology of CAS in Washington, DC. This meeting reviewed the progress of partnerships developed since the first symposium. It also identified additional areas for cooperation such as developing new opportunities for bi-directional training and exchange of U.S. and Chinese scientists in the areas of nanobiology and nanomedicine.

Joint caBIG® Workshop
Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (CAMS) and NCI
NCI and CAMS held an educational workshop showcasing efforts to share biomedical data among institutions in the United States and China featuring NCI's cancer Biomedical Informatics Grid (caBIG). The NCI Center for Bioinformatics and NCI staff based in China led the workshop planning for NCI. The workshop took place in Beijing and was hosted by the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (CAMS). Secretary Sebelius participated in the 2nd U.S.-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue in Beijing, China where she contributed to discussions on a variety of global health and development issues. The Dialogue was an important success in furthering a comprehensive relationship between the two countries. During her visit, she also met with officials from Peking Union Medical College and the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (CAMS) as well as NCI staff based in China.

Joint Workshop on Environmental Pollution and Cancer in China and the United States
Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH)
CAS and NIH convened a joint workshop in Guangzhou, China. Participants identified top emerging areas for research cooperation between China and the United States in cancer and environmental health with a focus on the impact of environmental pollution on cancer in children and adults.

Enabling a Future of Personalized Medicine:
Leveraging 30 Years of U.S.-China Scientific Progress
NCI and CAMS commemorated the 30-year anniversary of the agreement to collaborate by co-hosting a two-day symposium on personalized medicine in Beijing, China. This meeting summarized the state-of-the-science for several technologies that are driving the development of personalized cancer medicine, such as genomics, proteomics, and nanotechnology. Attendees aim to develop a framework for exploring new scientific directions that will be needed to move toward personalized cancer medicine in China, the United States, and around the world. First Joint U.S.-China Symposium on Nanobiology and Nanomedicine- Cancer Nanotechnology and Nanomedicine
The NIH co-organized this symposium with the National Center for Nanoscience and Technology of CAS in Beijing, China. The purpose of the symposium was to share experiences and exchange information about developing nanotechnologies for cancer applications. The meeting report was published in the July 2009 issue of Cancer Research [Wang, et al.].
